To spread trans-boundary humanities knowledge beyond the specialized area of the university and researchers, public lectures for the general audience are being designed and run. They have been held from late 2009 and the research team develops such lecture programs.
Lectures for the Public, 2013: Understanding Everyday Culture through Images
The world today is overflowing with images. These images are not mere signifiers that visually represent certain objects. What we see in our daily lives cover a vast spectrum of images from the vague imagery that we conjure up in our minds to codified images of values, senses, and ideals. The image has been recognized as a cultural phenomenon, which has led to the establishment of Image Studies as a subject area. This lecture aims to analyze images represented through a variety of genres including fine art, film, poetry, and novels. By looking into the implied meaning of these images, we seek to explore the vast array of cultural topics scattered throughout our everyday lives.
