Lectures for the Public, 2012: Humanities Beyond Boundaries 2: East Asia, Seen Through Imagination and Representation
East Asia is the geographical term that brings together Korea, China, and Japan, the three countries that have long formed a community that stretches beyond national borders. In this lecture, we explore East Asia and the various cultural topics originating from Korea, China, and Japan through two different points of view. The first is imagination. The images of East Asia will be examined as a source of imagination, the dynamic power that allows us to recreate images of worlds we have yet to experience. The other is experience. In this part of the lecture, we look into the various ways life in East Asia was experienced historically and culturally, and further examine how the lives of people were represented in literature, media, and other written documents.
